T.O.T.M.B.T.H.B.I.T.L.O.A.B.
Growing up, like so many others, I turned to literature searching for clues on how to offer more meaning to my life. But for me, especially as an African eldest brother, the search was more personal. I hounded for stories on brotherhood that could teach me about love, sacrifice, duty, and service — much in the same way we turn to films for inspiration when Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, or how a parent borrows lessons on gentleness and care from a beloved novel. I searched for stories that could show me how to embody strength and tenderness at the same time; how to protect, provide, and still love deeply.
Yet the more I searched, the more apparent it became that the love of a brother is rarely explored with the emotional depth it deserves. Literature has given us countless portraits of a mother’s love, a father’s love, and the love between lovers. But brotherhood — especially the quiet, sacrificial, deeply emotional labour of being a brother — often seemed reduced to something functional, restrained, almost mechanical. It was as though many stories allowed men to protect, but not to feel too deeply while doing so.
Out of that dissatisfaction, this book was born.
I began writing it as a celebration of the masculinity of meaningful brotherhood — the kind rooted not in in devotion, sacrifice, loyalty, and presence. And please, don’t ask me how long I’ve been writing this book because, truthfully, I have lost count of the years (lol).
It was our literary father, Chinua Achebe, who first inspired me to begin this journey when he wrote:
“If there is a book you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”
However, in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I lost a close friend. That loss changed me. And in many ways, it changed the direction of this book too.
Grief has a way of deepening one’s understanding of what matters. I found myself returning to these pages with a new awareness of what brotherhood truly means. I began to understand that brotherhood is not measured only by the moments we share, but also by the spaces people continue to occupy in our hearts long after they are gone. And by the time I completed this story, I could think of no worthier symbol for the beauty, resilience, and emotional complexity of a brother’s love than the legendary Halle Berry.
This book is my tribute to brotherhood and siblinghood in all its beauty and complexity. It is for the men who quietly carry the weight and responsibility of being brothers with grace, sacrifice, loyalty, and love. It is also my hope that more contemporary stories will begin to honour this kind of love more openly, so that young boys and men can finally see themselves reflected fully (emotionally and truthfully) in the stories they read.
And if this book inspires even one person to love their family more intentionally, to reach out more often, or to cherish the people closest to them while there is still time, then it will have fulfilled its purpose.
I truly hope you enjoy reading it. ❤️
